What is Pilates ?
Pilates is a method of movement exercises pioneered by Joseph & Clara Pilates in New York in the 1930's. Joe's method was known as Contrology prior to his death and was used amongst the general public and performing artists alike where it was successful in rehabilitating injuries and improving posture and general strength.

How does it work?
Pilates based his series of controlled movements of those movements of the child and various animals. The sequence of exercises involve lying down, sitting, standing and walking. By combining movement with breathing, Pilates - when done regularly, removes unnecessary muscle tension and imbalance whilst restoring strength to weakened areas preventing further injury or degeneration.

How and who can Pilates help?
Pilates exercises assist post-injury or for athletes and dancers seeking core strength, improved posture and greater range of movement and movement potential. Pilates brings harmony between the body's external and internal structures improving concentration, balance, co-ordination, breathing and circulation and cardiovascular strength and improving our general health and wellbeing.

Matwork or Studio equipment based classes?

Matwork classes offer pilates on mats with small props usually conducted in small groups with up to 12 people in a class (PILATESFoundation UK recommendation only). Class prices can vary, costing between £7 - £13 for a 1hour - 1.5hour class.  Matwork classes are offered at various levels - Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced, Super Advanced and there specialist pilates matwork classes such as Pregnancy, Back Pain, Post-Operative, Seniors etc. A pilates matwork class provides a continuous workout in a social atmosphere and encourages one another to improve.

Studio equipment classes are more client intensive and programmes reflect the clients individual needs.  Exercises are taken on the studio equipment - Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and auxillary equipment, which includes stability rolls, magic circles, barrels and therabands etc.
A private studio session can cost between £45 - £65 per hour and there may be an initial induction session to incorporate a physical assessment.
Studio sessions can be taken privately (1:1) or semi-privately (1:2) or in a small group (1:3) with each individual having their own programme.
Advanced Block bookings are offered on studio sessions for clients attending on a regular basis.
