PILATES
"A perfect balance of body & mind is that quality . . that furnishes . . all the physical and mental powers . . . for attaining . . . (the) ultimate goal . . . health and happiness". . . . .Joseph Pilates
Pilates is a method of movement using structured exercise. The method was pioneered by Joseph and Clara Pilates in New York in the 1920's. Joe's method, originally known as 'Contrology' was popular amongst the ballet dancers of his day, where it was used to rehabilitate injuries and improve general strength and posture. After his death, his method was renamed Pilates and made more widely accessible to the general public, where it has become the leading method of strength, conditioning and rehabilitation for people worldwide.
Pilates based his series of controlled exercises on movements of the small child and various animals. The sequence of exercises involve lying down, sitting, standing and walking. By combining movement with breathing, Pilates - when done regularly, removes unnecessary muscle tension and imbalance whilst restoring strength to weakened areas preventing further injury or degeneration.
Pilates exercises assist post-injury or for athletes and dancers seeking core strength, improved posture and greater range of movement and movement potential. Pilates brings harmony between the body's external and internal structures improving concentration, balance, co-ordination, breathing and circulation and cardiovascular strength and improving our general health and wellbeing.
Studio equipment classes are client intensive focused programmes and reflect the needs of the individual. Exercises are conducted on studio equipment using spring resistance - Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and auxillary equipment, including stability rolls, magic circles, barrels and therabands etc.
An initial physical assessment takes 1.5hrs and takes into account medical/physical history to devise appropriate programmes. We liaise where necessary with your GP, osteopath and physiotherapist to ensure smooth transition from clinical to maintenance workouts.
Studio sessions can be taken privately (1:1) or semi-privately (1:2) or in a small group (1:3) with each individual having their own programme.
